The symbolism

Why a wren on a signpost?

We didn't invent either of these. Ireland did — centuries ago.

The wren on the signpost
The wren rí na n-éan
In Irish folklore, the birds held a contest to crown a king: whoever flew highest would win. The wren hid on the eagle's back, then popped out at the last second to fly that bit higher and became rí na n-éan, King of all birds. In some Irish towns, on St. Stephen's Day (26th December), Lá an Dreoilín is still celebrated, and you might still see a wren being carried on top of a decorated pole in honour of this clever, adventurous wee bird. The wren, small, clever, and utterly Irish - this wee bird will guide you on your journey to your destination.
The Irish signpost a genuine fingerpost
Ireland's black-and-white signposts were the standard on rural roads for the best part of two centuries - some examples date back to the 1800s - bilingual, hand-painted, distances given in miles. These were, and indeed still remain throughout the country, many standing beside the EU-standard signage that arrived in 1977. They remain one of the most recognisable symbols of an Irish road trip.
